Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders appears to be extremely sensitive about players transferring from his program. On Wednesday, the second-year head coach trashed a player from a non-rival school on his X account.
Sanders has received heavy criticism for losing nearly 61 percent of its 2023 recruiting class to the transfer portal. Sanders has made an argument that incoming transfers that start are more important than backups that leave. However, he seems to be upset by the narrative that he can’t keep recruits.
Per Alex Musa with GH, Sanders got into X beef with former Buffaloes player Xavier Smith after Smith’s interview with The Athletic was published:
On Tuesday, former Buffs cornerback and current Austin Peay playmaker Xavier Smith took shots at coach Sanders through an interview with the Athletic, calling the frontman out for showing little compassion to those leaving the program last offseason.
Colorado hired Sanders away from Jackson State after the former Pac-12 squad posted a brutal 1-11 record in 2022. However, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the son of Deion Sanders, clapped back, calling Smith “mid at best” and disregarding his claims. On Wednesday, coach Prime backed his son via Twitter after the younger Sanders received much criticism for his behavior.
Sanders decided to put Smith’s teammate, Jaheim Ward, on blast. He essentially mocked the player for not having a great stat sheet at Austin Peay.

Deion doesn’t have much to go on here. His stat was 4-8 last season. His X interactions this week have been unprofessional. Recruits and transfers will take notice.
