If there was an X-factor in the Boston Celtics’ NBA Playoffs run to their 18th banner, that guy would be Derrick White. Coach Joe Mazzulla has learned to run his offense through this guard and maximized his potential on defense. Oftentimes, he even gets to shine more than Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. A good example of this is their first game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He made it rain like Stephen Curry!

Only four players in NBA Playoffs history notched 20 triples in a span of three games, per Tim Bontemps of ESPN. Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors is one of them alongside his fellow splash brother Klay Thompson. Last year’s champions, the Denver Nuggets, were also well-represented. Jamal Murray is on the list and he might want to replicate that performance to keep them alive against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The last one? Well, Derrick White was the latest addition.

The Celtics guard sank seven out of his 12 three-pointers to make this historic list. He also went nine for 16 in his field goal attempts to give his squad 25 points for the night. His contributions did not just stop there too. He was able to make the pass to the open man whenever the Cavaliers’ defense collapsed. This big improvement in his playmaking and passing allowed him to drop five assists for this NBA Playoffs matchup.

Derrick White ended the night just short of the game-high record. It was Jaylen Brown, who despite not going Stephen Curry type of ballistic, still got to score 32 points for that night.

Celtics bury the Cavaliers alive

To say that the game was close throughout is disingenuous. It was all Celtics starting in the first quarter up until the final buzzer. They knocked down 45 out of their 92 field goals to use in the pantry now. Everyone on the Celtics also had a phenomenal outside stroke in this game. They sank about 39.1% of their shots and saw the bottom of the net.

Other guys also stepped up to get the win for the Celtics. Jayson Tatum, Jrue Holiday, and Al Horford all combined for 39 points. Payton Pritchard was also a big guy who wanted to keep playing and gave a spark off the bench. He scored 16 points and even got two assists to round out the night.

It was not just on offense where the Celtics dominated for the scoreline to be 120 to 95. Joe Mazzulla’s squad also outworked the Cavaliers on the glass. The JB Bickerstaff-led team only got to rebound the ball 38 times in this NBA Playoffs clash. This was dwarfed by the Celtics who got 55 rebounds without a crucial guy like Kristaps Porzingis.

This Celtics team is continuously learning and building large runs. This is a good sign for a championship-winning NBA Playoffs run.
